I'm curious to know what you're thinking about all the cap-space commentary surrounding the Leafs after the JT signing. I'm a huge leafs fan and want to believe they can keep the big 3 now, but I'm also aware that other teams might be able to offer them more money.
This is a bit of a touchy subject, it seems. To be clear, the Leafs can re-sign everybody, and from all accounts, they will. It doesn’t really matter how much other teams can offer them, because unless they do something ridiculous, the Leafs will match. Nylander’s the only one who could potentially be offer-sheeted at this point, and if things go like Dubas wants, Matthews and Marner will never make it to RFA status. Personally, I’ve always looked at it as less of a money issue and more about dealing from strength to fix areas of weakness. There’s an obvious candidate for who could be moved in a deal to bring back a player that would shore up the Leafs defense, whether fans are happy to hear about it or not. But from a pure salary cap perspective, they can re-sign all their players without much issue.
