What do you think will happen if Erik Karlsson goes to Tampa Bay? It makes me extremely nervous to think about because they might have to get rid of some really good players.
Oh, they will. There’s no question. There’s no way they’re taking on the Ryan contract, so they’re going to have to pay full price for Karlsson, and that’s going to be a really steep. And if they have to give up that much, they’re for sure going to want to sign him to an extension, which is not going to be less than $11 million/season. With Kucherov getting paid next season, probably not less than $10 million/season, and Point, they’ll be tight to the cap after they fill out their roster. It’s complicated by the various no-trade clauses some of their guys have, but they’re going to have to move out at least two, and maybe three of their top-nine forwards. If they can find a taker for Callahan, that helps, but it’s not enough. And that’s not even counting what players/prospects they have to give up just to get Karlsson. It’s why there’s all this talk of them bringing a third team into the trade to help disperse the salary a bit. This is pure speculation, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see Callahan end up on some shitty team with a ton of cap space and Johnson end up going to Ottawa along with whatever package of picks/prospects/young players they decide on. He’s cheap enough I think even cheap-ass Ottawa would be willing to take on his salary and slot him in behind Duchene at 2C.
