Thoughts on the Patches trade?
I think Montreal did pretty well, all things considered. They tanked his value with all this trade request bullshit. A pretty high-end centre prospect (who absolutely should NOT play for this team next season, no matter how good he is), and a second round pick isn’t bad. Tatar is what he is. He’s gonna give them 20 goals, and they need scoring. Doesn’t help with the centre situation, but at this point, that doesn’t really matter. Getting VGK to retain a little of his salary was good, even if it wasn’t much. As for Pacioretty, he’ll do well in Vegas. He’ll finally have an actual NHL centre to play with, and be on a good team. His last season was a fluke, and barring injury, I think he’ll be a very productive player for them. Getting him locked up to an extension so quickly was a good move by Vegas. A little commitment to start things off on the right foot.
As for how it all went down, how it was dragged out, and everything along with it, I find it hilarious in a way, and sad in another. Sad for Pacioretty, who didn’t deserve it. And hilarious because good luck signing any significant players moving forward, Montreal. The way this played out, nobody who has any other options is going to think about signing with the Canadiens. Certainly not while Bergevin is still there, and probably not with the ownership group as it currently stands. What a shit show.
