How much do you think Matthews gets on his next contract?
$13 million/season. Toronto’s going to try to lock him in at what Tavares got, but he’s already better than Tavares, and only going to get better. I don’t think people fully understand just how good of a scorer he is. His first two seasons, he’s scored more even-strength goals than Ovechkin did during his first two, in 20 less games and playing 4 minutes less per game. That’s insane. This isn’t even taking into account the start he’s gotten off to this season. I’m assuming a cap ceiling of around $82 million next season, and $13 million would put him at slightly less than 16%. McDavid got 16.67%. That seems about right to me. If they’re lucky, his agent will just try to match the money McDavid got. That would actually be a bargain for Toronto. But I don’t think that happens, barring some crazy injury or something this season. That ability to score at even-strength is going to get him paid. And if he can produce at even a mediocre rate on the powerplay this season, we’re looking at overall Ovechkin-like numbers moving forward.
